Interview Stephen Cheetham

What is your greatest achievement?
Actually being able to do something I love doing every day and getting paid for it.
How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it?
Colourful and simple, and sometimes a little bit funny.
What piece of advice would you give your 15 year old self?
None at all. Every 15 year old thinks they know it all, so I'd be wasting my own time giving advice to myself. If that makes sense?!
When are you happiest?
After my morning espresso, when I get a client saying they agree and my idea is best.
What is the worst job you have had?
I did some work on a fairly high profile Christmas job. I don't want to say too much, but
it wasn't what I expected when I said yes!
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
Clint Eastwood. Definitely not an accurate portrayal, but it's my film and I can get whoever I want.
What is your karaoke song?
I've never done karaoke.
What 5 things can't you live without?
Food, water, oxygen, sunlight and my new camera.
What is the greatest invention of all time?
My new camera.
If you didn't do what you do, what would you do?
I'd try to be an astrophysicist. And fail.

Running a marathon, learning french.. not at the same time.
How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it?
Like a childs done it… lots of animals, patterns, textures, limited colours
What piece of advice would you give your 15 year old self?
Put the cake down...
When are you happiest?
In the mountains eating beans cooked on my gas cooker or when I'm by the sea, both make me equally happy.
What is the worst job you have had?
Cleaner at a wetherspoons pub in cornwall - sunday mornings were awful.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
Drew barrymore… although she is way cooler
What is your karaoke song?
Total eclipse of the heart.
What 5 things can't you live without?
Running, e45 cream, beans, writing lists, charlie & craig (my cats)

Interview Carlos Garde-Martin

What is your greatest achievement?
Career wise I would say it was working for the Brighton Fringe, not only are they so fun to work for, but seeing your work plastered all over your hometown is fantastic. Especially the large-scale stuff like the Citroen comedy van and info point.
How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it?
Bold line, fun, and colours that make your eyeballs ache. Quite often my work has been described as surreal, pop, and intricate - but not always in that order.
What piece of advice would you give your 15 year old self?
Don’t be scared to go for what you really want. I spent a lot of time working away in private not really showing anyone what I do. I would tell myself to be brave and share my artwork with anyone who will look, and especially those that won’t.

When are you happiest?
Either when I’m drawing, eating, or laughing. I am yet to find a successful way of combining the three.
What is the worst job you have had?
Hands down it has to be working as a Christmas temp at the post office sorting mail. Not only was it the most repetitive thing I have ever done, it also meant getting up at 2:30am.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
Leo DiCaprio, and Tarantino to direct. Of course I would have to have a cameo role in there somewhere. Probably something ironic like the art teacher I had at school. He told me to stop doodling and reading comics, and look at Caravaggio for inspiration.

What is your karaoke song?
Guns and Roses – Paradise City. It’s always a crowd pleaser and it’s easy to sing along to. Rap music on the other hand should be avoided because as much as you think you know the lyrics to that song, you don’t.
What do you dislike most about popular culture?
Technology is making it easier and easier for people not to communicate with each other properly. Instead of calling to arrange a meet up with friends it’s all done via text or facebook. You can even go to the supermarket now and do all your shopping, scan it yourself, pack it, and go home without even talking to anyone.
What is the greatest invention of all time?
The pen (or pencil which ever came first). With out that I would be drawing with a stick and some mud.
If you didn't do what you do, what would you do?
I used to be quite in to archeology when I was very young but that was when I thought it would be like Indiana Jones. The reality is middle-aged men in shorts, with long beards and Cornish accents digging holes in car parks.
